So this week was alright!

We went to this place called Staglands which is like an epic zoo. We went with the holiday program that all the members here work for and own.

It's like a walk through petting zoo kind of place but with native New Zealand animals! It was a beautiful place with pretty interesting animals!

Then the next couple of days I just worked like crazy on my fireside videos. Which was 2 days ago and it turned out great! We had lots of great feedback and tons of people came! I only heard good things(:

We also had a pretty awesome day of sports yesterday! We went to petone which is like a beach area in the Hutt Valley and it had courts and also a rugby field! So I was there playing basketball with a bunch of less actives for a few hours.

Other than that, I don't feel like much happened this week! Just stayed busy with the videos pretty much! I'll get up to more this week. Sorry for the short message!!

Love you all thooooo(:

New Zealand Fern Tree

This past week was good!

I've been working a lot on these videos for a fireside which is Sunday! They are called "His Love."  They are based off of the Church messages called "His Grace"! It will be interviews piled with pictures of people from the ward I'm serving in and their conversion stories and finding the gospel! It should be really cool. I will have them done by this week.

We had Zone Training this past week as well where we learned a lot about rules and how they're tightening down on them. Which is okay.. The only one that is weird is how we can't use any church studying material to learn more and simpler! We probably won't even be able to read ensigns soon since they aren't in the official missionary reference library which is crazy. I was starting to really enjoy using student manuals and things like that for my studies but I guess no more. haha
We also had some Rugby practices for the local High school! It's going well! A lot of the kids recognize us on the streets now and say Hey instead of growling us haha. It's cool to learn about rugby as well!

Haynze

We taught Haynze the Gospel of Jesus Christ this week and I invited him to be baptized! He said yes and he is super keen! He is so excited to be a member and to get the priesthood and help the Deacons Quorum grow! (to 1 member) hahaha. He is already looking at the future hoping to serve a mission and everything! He will be my first baptism and I'm so excited! He is a great kid and asks a heap of questions! He's the man.

We spent 13 hours straight in the chapel yesterday due to meetings and rescue visits, cottage evenings, potluck, and song practice for those with numbers in next weeks fireside! Suchhhh a long day.

Elder Withers

And i'm sad to say bye to my lovely companion. Elder Garisun Withers. He is THE man. I have learned so much from him and he has been such a great example to me of being a proper and obedient missionary. He taught me how to get things out of my studies and how to be a great leader. I'm excited for him to experience new things as he goes to Nelson to take the Zone Leader position there, but.. I will miss him so much. Thanks for everything Sole.

But this has been my week! Thanks for all your support and prayers and please email! I'd love to hear from you (: Love you and love the work! OFA ATU!!

Kia Ora!

Well this week has been good! They start to all kind of seem the same though haha.

I had my first Hangi since i've been in New Zealand so that's cool! A Hangi is an Island way of cooking. They put lamb, pumpkin, chicken, pork and heaps of stuff in the ground with hot ash and coal and completely cover it with dirt and stuff and let it cook over like 14 to 24 hours or so. It was really good! A guy gave it to us for free when they're typically like 20 bucks! His name is pronounced like Irrroooo or something like that. It's weird but he is cool! Definitely a potential investigator!

We were also given a bag of like 20 Panikekes from the Samoan cart at the market for free! They are just scoops of pancake batter put into a deep fryer. YUM. They actually want us to teach them a lesson tomorrow! So that should be cool (:

Something else I bought at the market was this ollllld cigarette box full of old as stamps! The oldest one I found in there was an 1892 USA stamp!! Heaps of old ones from different countries and stuff so that's way cool.

stamp collection

We also went to the big museum in Wellington with the Youth for PDay! We had Companion study with them in the morning showing them some study habits and sharing and stuff then we shot over to the museum. Te Papa is the name of it. They had this awesome exhibit about New Zealand Kiwis that fought in wars and stuff and I guess Peter Jackson was in charge of it. He built these massive sculptures of soldiers and stuff. Like they were HUGE and SOOOO real looking. It was so cool. There was lots of cool photography of old Maori people and stuff as well which was really interesting.

Incredible detail on these statues

Bryson says these things have got to be close to 30 feet tall
And..

We taught a couple of teenagers a short 5 minute restoration lesson about the Book of Mormon so hopefully they read it! They are quite strange. They said they "gave their lives to Jesus like a week ago bro.." and it's pretty crackup actually. They talk about asking Jesus questions and stuff by writing down on paper and how he responds to them is this: they write the first word and then I guess the Savior writes down the rest through their hand.. Weird. Hopefully they are willing to learn the truth and how to receive real revelation.

I'm falling more and more in love with this gospel. It is so true! Our Brother Jesus Christ rose! He lives and leads this church. I'm so grateful for the scriptures and the way they answer our questions. Even questions we didn't know we had! I'm grateful for my whakapapa as well!

Thanks for all the support and emails! I'd love to hear from more of yous!

Tender Mercies & Miracles! ~ 2/7/16

This week was awesome. I mainly want to talk about Saturday, which was Friday for many of you.

We started off the day by walking just randomly to the chapel (for no reason) and found Sister Edwards there taking care of the Garden! So we talked to her for a bit about how we should focus on Less Actives and stuff. We then were walking back to our flat when we saw this CRAZY old lady (lots of those in Gore), but this lady could barely move. Her walker had fallen off the back of her electric wheelchair and so we were able to help her and get her back on her way. The Lord probably put her in our path so that people could see why we are here.

We then went on a rescue mission to Mataura (part of my new area) and brought Brother Clark along to see if he could help us out visiting people he knew! So we had okay success with him. We met 1 less active with Brother Clark's help.

So Brother Clark said that he needed to go and he would drop us off by our car, but me and Vaha'i asked if he could drop us off just where we were so we could walk! We decided to knock on Kayla Hema's door.

Background on her: She was door knocked by past Elders and seemed super prepared! She took a Book of Mormon and said that she had read much of it! But the past like 10 times that I have gone over to meet her she hasn't been there!!

Back to the story. We walked up to her door and were just about to knock when we heard someone coming up to us from the front gate! I asked if it was her, and she said yes, and she also said something very surprising to me. She said "Yeah the past dudes that gave me the book of mormon were nice and all but I'm done. I don't really want you guys over or anything to learn." I asked her what the problem was and she said "there isn't any proof. There is no evidence that your book and religion is right. I can't live my life based off faith. That just seems stupid."

I didn't really know what to say for a couple seconds. But I remembered some MTC training. Silence is okay. So I sat for a second. And the spirit just told me to bare my testimony. I bore my testimony on how God gave us liberty and freedom to choose. She had many questions about the pre earth life and Satan being brothers with Jesus. Amazingly I had studied that very thing that morning. I explained to her our knowledge of the Plan of Salvation and how this Gospel has blessed me in my life and my family! I asked her if she felt blessed to have a family and she said yes. We had a long discussion (guided by the spirit) about how living a gospel of Jesus Christ, the perfect example, would be a good life to have even if you didn't believe in our teachings. She agreed and she totally flipped her mood toward us. We set an appointment to go and teach her about everything on Wednesday. We will start with the Restoration but also see what questions she has. This was the best experience I have had so far in this area.

So me and Vaha'i were pumped after this and just decided to keep going and visiting people! We received a referral from a member in Invercargill about her son! Jaden Kahuroa. He lives on River Street Mataura. We went over there and it was a little sketchy at first. We heard he was a "naughty boy" or whatever so we just went over expecting whatever. It was dark inside and He was with a couple mates. One of them was crazy tipsy and came up to the door and started talking about religion and how crazy it all is. He said he didn't believe in science and only God haha. Very weird guy. We asked if Jaden was around and he was super cool!! He said he is at one of the lowest points in his life and was praying for help.. He lifted up his pant leg and showed an ankle tracker on his leg and said he was stuck in that house for another month. But we asked if we could go over and start teaching and visiting him, He was like "Yeah bros, sweet as!" We started talking about how he wanted to start on the straight and narrow again. How he used to be active as a young boy and now wants to start going again with his partner and kids!!

So after that, me and Vaha'i are on a missionary high. We just want to talk to everyone and anyone, so we kept visiting houses and inviting to church. It was so fun!!

We drove back to our flat and I told Vaha'i I didn't want to just sit around with the spirit so strong! We should go out again. So me and him just rode our bikes around Gore for about an hour but nothing happened. So when we finished that up I decided I wanted to go take pictures of the birds in the Garden Park across the street (something I could have done any other time in my first 3 months of Gore). And we were there for like a half hour. It seemed like a long time but I was just feeling so peaceful and amazing there! I was over by the Peacocks and trying to take photos of them with cool feathers, but they weren't having it!

Some random lady came up to us and started talking to us about how it isn't the right season and that the male is too young or something.  It was cool of her to stop and talk to us! So when she was about to leave she turned back and stopped! She said,"actually, I need to tell you guys something.. I'm a Mormon."

Me and Vaha'i were just like....... Uhhhhhhhhhh, hahahaha, it's so weird to find mormons here in Gore and we didn't know why were were at the bird cages or why we were there so long.. but wow. Heavenly Father has blessed us so much this weekend!!

We had 20 people come to church and this was a week where I had to conduct sacrament! Usually we only have like 4 come!!

And later on Sunday we got a call from the Beckmanns (senior couple) who are in Hamilton doing temple work before it closes for a couple years. They said they prayed soooo hard for us in the celestial room the day before. They even have our branch on the prayer role!

It is amazing how the Lord blesses us!!! I couldn't believe what had happened this weekend!! I'm so lucky to have this gospel and I can't wait to share it more and more and more!!!!!!!! I love you all! Have a great week.

Atearoa

3 months and 15 pounds later I am still doing great! In this last week not a whole lot has happened.
I went on exchanges with my District Leader who had his 1 year mark on my birthday so we got to celebrate together which was fun! We went to Kaka point and Nugget point for the day and went on a little adventure just walking around just enjoying the ocean and beautiful beach!

Gore has been pretty tough.. finding people is near to impossible here. With such a small branch, not many members help out or share word of the Elders. So we are pretty much on our own. Lot's of door knocking. Which so far hasn't gotten us any new investigators or anything. Sometimes Satan tries to get into your head by telling you that you aren't working hard enough, or your not a good missionary. But lucky for me and the other missionaries out around the world, we have the chance to have an EXTREMELY close relationship with Heavenly Father, and I know when he is working in my life, I'm a successful missionary. All it takes is patience and prayer through long suffering. D&C 24:8.

Many of you may be wondering how my accent is coming along... It's not. hahahahah It's too hard. No person from america could train there mouth to move as lazily as a kiwi or maori moves their mouth 😅 But i'll keep at it!!! I'm going to start working on my maori phrases as well. I've been learning a few lines in Tongan from my companion which is super cool. like... "Oua nake eke omai taimini" (That's for Christian Bain).

Anyways!! Love you all! Please email me with updates about life and stuff (:

Ofa atu.
